Joshua is a central figure in the Bible, known for leading the Israelites into the Promised Land after the death of Moses. His story begins in Egypt, where he was born into the tribe of Ephraim. He first appears in the Bible as a young man serving as Moses’ assistant and as a military leader during the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness. Joshua is one of the twelve spies Moses sends to explore the land of Canaan. While ten of the spies bring back a fearful report, Joshua and Caleb trust in God’s promise and encourage the people to take possession of the land.

After Moses’ death, Joshua is appointed by God as his successor to lead the Israelites into Canaan. God commands Joshua to be strong and courageous, promising His presence and guidance as he leads the people into battle and takes possession of the land. Joshua begins by leading the Israelites across the Jordan River, which God miraculously parts, allowing them to enter the land.

The first major victory under Joshua’s leadership is the capture of Jericho. Following God’s specific instructions, the Israelites march around the city for seven days, and on the seventh day, the walls of Jericho collapse, allowing them to take the city. Joshua continues to lead the Israelites in a series of military campaigns, conquering key cities and regions of Canaan, fulfilling God’s promise to give the land to the descendants of Abraham.

Joshua also oversees the division of the land among the twelve tribes of Israe. He reminds the people to remain faithful to God, warning them against idolatry and urging them to obey God’s commands. Before his death, Joshua renews the covenant with Israel at Shechem, urging the people to choose to serve the Lord. Joshua dies at the age of 110, and his leadership marks the transition from the wilderness wanderings to the settlement of Israel in the Promised Land.

Joshua is remembered as a faithful and courageous leader who trusted in God’s promises and led the Israelites to fulfill their divine inheritance.
