Samson, one of the judges of Israel, is a legendary figure known for his extraordinary strength, which was given to him by God to deliver the Israelites from the oppression of the Philistines. His story is recorded in the Book of Judges.

Samson’s life begins with a miraculous birth. An angel of the Lord appears to his barren mother and announces that she will bear a son dedicated to God. As part of this vow, Samson must abstain from wine, unclean food, and cutting his hair. From an early age, the Spirit of the Lord empowers him with incredible strength.

As a young man, Samson develops a pattern of impulsive and reckless behavior. He marries a Philistine woman against his parents’ wishes, leading to conflict. During his wedding feast, he poses a riddle to the Philistines, which they solve by coercing his wife. In response, Samson kills thirty Philistines to settle the debt. Later, when his wife is given to another man, Samson sets the Philistines’ fields on fire using foxes tied together with torches.

Samson’s most famous exploit occurs when he is betrayed by his lover, Delilah. The Philistines bribe her to discover the secret of his strength. After several failed attempts, Samson finally reveals that his strength comes from his uncut hair. Delilah cuts his hair while he sleeps, and the Philistines capture him, gouge out his eyes, and imprison him.

While in captivity, Samson’s hair begins to grow back, symbolizing the return of his strength. During a Philistine celebration in honor of their god Dagon, Samson is brought out to entertain the crowd. He prays to God for strength one last time and pulls down the pillars of the temple, killing himself and thousands of Philistines in the process.

Samson’s life is marked by his great potential and flaws. He is a complex figure whose story illustrates themes of divine purpose, human weakness, and redemption. Despite his failures, Samson is remembered as a deliverer of Israel and is listed among the faithful in Hebrews 11:32.
