The twelve disciples of Jesus, also called apostles, were ordinary men chosen by Jesus to learn from his teachings and to spread his message of salvation.
1. Peter (Simon): A fisherman and natural leader. He was bold and passion
ate. Jesus called him the “rock” on which He would build His church.
2. Andrew: Peter’s brother and also a fisherman, Andrew was the first dis
ciple called by Jesus. Known for his role in introducing people to Jesus.
3. James (Son of Zebedee): One of the “Sons of Thunder,” James was part of
Jesus’ inner circle. He was the first apostle martyred.
4. John (Son of Zebedee): James’s brother and another “Son of Thunder,”
John was especially close to Jesus, often called the “beloved disciple.”
5. Philip: From Bethsaida, like Peter and Andrew. He often brought people
to Jesus. He was practical but struggled to fully understand Jesus’ power.
6. Bartholomew (Nathanael): Known for his honesty and faith, he was
brought to Jesus by Philip. Jesus commended his genuine character.
7. Matthew (Levi): A tax collector turned disciple, Matthew demonstrated
Jesus’ mission to save even the outcasts.
8. Thomas: Known as “Doubting Thomas,” he is remembered for question
ing Jesus’ resurrection until he saw Jesus’ wounds.
9. James (Son of Alphaeus): Also called “James the Less,” he is less
prominent in the Gospels but faithfully followed Jesus.
10. Thaddaeus (Jude): Often called Judas (not Iscariot), he asked Jesus about
revealing Himself to the disciples, reflecting a sincere heart.
11. Simon the Zealot: A former political revolutionary, Simon redirected his
zeal to spreading Jesus’ message.
12. Judas Iscariot: The treasurer of the group, Judas betrayed Jesus for thirty
pieces of silver and took his own life after he was overcome by guilt.
