Isaiah, one of the major prophets in the Bible, played a pivotal role in proclaiming God’s messages during a critical period in Israel’s history. His story is primarily found in the Book of Isaiah, which he authored, spanning prophecies of judgment, hope, and the coming of the Messiah.

Isaiah lived in Jerusalem and prophesied during the reigns of four kings of Judah around the 8th century BC. His ministry began with a dramatic vision of God’s holiness and majesty in the temple, where he saw the Lord seated on a throne and angels proclaiming, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty”. Overwhelmed by his unworthiness, Isaiah was cleansed by a burning coal touched to his lips and responded to God’s call with, “Here am I. Send me!”.

Isaiah warned Judah and Jerusalem of impending judgment for their sins, including idolatry, injustice, and rebellion against God. He foretold the destruction of Israel by Assyria and Judah’s eventual exile by Babylon. Yet, Isaiah’s message was not solely one of judgment; it also included profound hope. He prophesied the return of a faithful remnant, the restoration of Jerusalem, and a future kingdom of peace under a righteous rule.

Central to Isaiah’s prophecies is the promise of the Messiah. He foretold the birth of a child called Immanuel, “God with us”, and described the Messiah as a suffering servant who would bear the sins of many, bringing salvation through his sacrifice. These passages are foundational in Christian theology, pointing to Jesus Christ.

Isaiah also spoke of God’s sovereignty over all nations, emphasizing that He alone is worthy of worship. His writings include vivid imagery of a future new heaven and earth where God’s people dwell in eternal peace and joy.

Isaiah’s life and ministry exemplify obedience to God’s call and unwavering faith in His promises. His prophecies continue to inspire hope and trust in God’s redemptive plan for humanity.
